The Power of Love + A Free Printable

February 3, 2014

Lilly’s superpower has been LOVE for a few years now and she enjoys sharing her power whenever given the chance – or at the very least, she’s quick to tell you about it. So Valentine’s Day around here is pretty special. And who doesn’t love LOVE?

I’m keenly aware that time is passing quickly and grateful for the fact that the girls will spend hours doing crafts with me. One of these days I am going to wake up and they are going to be teenagers and laugh when I ask if they want to do cut out paper snowflakes or make Valentines with me. But for the moment, they often wake up and head straight for the craft table to draw, cut and glue or practice their writing. Then when evening comes we have to drag them away from some impromptu craft to get ready for dinner or bedtime. I am hopeful that they hold onto their creative spirit well into and long after they are hormone-filled teenage girls.

Together we designed these Valentine cards for their school friends. The project had to be simple enough for them to complete (at age 3 + 5) without a lot of hovering by me and I wanted them to be able to personalize each card. It’s a sweet and easy way to for you to share some quality craft time with your little love AND they will have something special to give their friends on Valentine’s Day.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • PDF printable (link below), printer + 8.5 x 11″ card stock/heavy paper (print at home or print at your local quick-print shop)
  • X-Acto knife or paper cutter for trimming (scissors will work, too!)
  • A ruler
  • Cutting mat or other surface that you can safely cut on
  • Crayons, markers, glitter, glue, stickers
  • Clear plastic treat bags, similar to these (I found mine on the party aisle of my grocery store)
  • An assortment of sweet treats to fill the treat bags
  • Stapler

1) Print out PDF file (download below) on color or B+W printer, trim down the center of each page using light grey lines as guides for your cut. Once trimmed, each page will yield two cards. (This step is for grown-ups only!)

2) OK, ready for the kids now! Gather crayons and markers and commence decorating and addressing the printed cards. It would be fun to use colorful stickers or glitter as well. Younger children may need help writing the names. Lilly helped her little sister write the names on her cards.

3) Fill each plastic bag with a few pieces of candy, pencils or other small treats. Trim (or fold) excess from the top of the plastic bag, if necessary, so that it looks tidy and you have a small amount to tuck into the paper card before stapling.

4) Fold each decorated paper card in half lengthwise and place over the top portion of the plastic bag. Staple once on each side to secure.

5) Wa-lah!  Share your Valentine love!

Splurge vs. Steal: Rangoli Rug by Nanimarquina + IKEA VIRRING

September 12, 2013

Splurge_VS_Steal_001While browsing IKEA recently (after making returns and having the requisite Swedish Meatballs) I was taken by the VIRRING rug. It seemed familiar to me and when I later had the opportunity I poked through my Pinterest files and found the dazzling Rangoli Rug by Nanimarquina. Bingo! No wonder I was taken by the eye-catching rug at IKEA, the Rangoli and VIRRING are similar in aesthetic design.

Oh yes, back to IKEA – I thought of all places in my home the VIRRING would make a big impact (bathroom floor, in front of the kitchen sink, inside the front door or the laundry room to name a few) but decided to leave it for another day as it was not on my shopping list. At $9.99 it really is a steal considering the extra helping of graphic appeal it offers.

Rangoli Rug by Nanimarquina (4′ 2″ diameter) $924

VIRRING rug by IKEA (31 1/2″ diameter) $9.99

Lilly’s Dimples is Open for Business!

September 10, 2013

After having an Etsy account since 2009, I thought it was time to put it to good use. Lilly’s Dimples (the shop) is open for business! This is going to be lots of fun and I’ve got two of the cutest little models/helpers around to assist me.

Many more items and categories will be added in the days to come – I had to get a few things posted to get over the hump of getting started. For me, the first steps are always the hardest!

The shop will give me an outlet for combining my love for art, design, typography and textiles. I am incredibly excited to be offering custom and predesigned posters, invitations, announcements, rubber stamps, clothing and lots more under the branding of Lilly’s Dimples // Bluehaus Design Co.

Thanks for taking a minute to take a look, bookmark the store and share it with your friends. I also take custom orders and can design/create just about anything your heart desires.
