Something to Talk About

April 1, 2011

Art should make you feel something. It should make you think or teach you something about life.

The artwork from 1200 Posters does these things and more. This art continues a conversation that was started by the writer, speaker and consultant, Margaret Wheatley, in her book Turning to One Another.

From Margaret Wheatley’s website: When this book was first published in 2002, I made a rash statement: “I believe we can change the world if we start listening to one another again.” I still believe this. I still believe that if we turn to one another, if we begin talking with each other – especially with those we call stranger or enemy – then this world can reverse its darkening direction and change for the good. And I know with all my heart that the only way the world will change is if many more of us step forward, let go of our judgments, become curious about each other, and take the risk to begin a conversation.

The inspiration for each month’s poster is a passage from Ms. Wheatley’s book and will be executed by up-and-coming artists:

November 2010
There is no power greater than community discovering what it cares about.
December 2010
Ask what’s possible, not what’s wrong. Keep asking.
January 2011
Notice what you care about. Assume that many others share your dreams.
February 2011
Be brave enough to start a conversation that matters.
March 2011
Talk to people you know. Talk to people you don’t know. Talk to people you never talk to.
April 2011
Expect to be surprised.
May 2011
Treasure curiosity more than certainty.
June 2011
Invite everyone who cares to work on what’s possible.
July 2011
Know that creative solutions come from new connections.
August 2011
Remember, you don’t fear people whose story you don’t know.
September 2011
Real listening always brings people closer together.
October 2011
Trust that meaningful conversations can change the world.

The artwork is original, affordable and carries a compelling message. Each month’s piece is limited to a run of 100, sized at 13 x 17″ and sold for $20 each. Who couldn’t use a gentle reminder to start an unexpected conversation that just might open your heart and mind?
